Information for New Parents

Baby

Dear Parents:

We understand the mixed emotions you may be feeling at this time. We would like to share our knowledge with you. We hope you will find it useful.

We realize that each situation is as unique as each child and family; however, we hope it will become apparent how precious our children are to us and how proud we are of them. We invite you to join the circle and get to know us! With our very best wishes for you and your baby...

Researchers from Stamford university recently discovered that learning delay is often associated with deficits in the memory centres, making it difficult for the brain to collect and make use of experiences in a way necessary to form new memories and underpin the development of learning. The new study, in mice, pinpoints the key defects in the brain, and suggests a possible way to tackle them. The full article can be read here

Education Cutbacks

C'mon Everybody! Start shouting! Our children's right to Education is under threat. A cap on SNAs, and the cancellation of the free second year of preschool is going to cause many of our children (and their Families) untold hardship. So, please, please, get in touch with your TDs - email, ring, send letters. Every day. Get family and friends to do this too. Unless we make ourselves heard, our children will suffer. Here's another thing - fire up youtube and get the clip Give Our Kids their SNAs.... Ireland. It's excellent - forward it to everybody you know - get them (and their family/friends) emailing, ringing and writing too. We must Speak Up to be heard.

As our membership is all too aware, the debate on education spending by the Government is still ongoing. Deputy Finian McGrath (parent, fundfraiser and campaigner for Down Syndrome Ireland - Dublin Branch) sent along some detail of the debates happening at the moment in the Dail - the first clip is from a Private Members Motion on Special Educational Needs on 12/07/11
