Getting Resource Hours for your child

What is it with boxes and why do service providers and the government love them so much; when the implication of the "box" can be huge for an individual child. If a child is boxed as having a moderate learning disability, then significant supports are avaiable from service providers, and schools. However,  if a child has mild intellectual disability then the supports available to help a child in achieving their potential are defined by the ability of the parent to "persuade" the authorities that their child deserves it over all the other deserving children. So what can you do about it ?

Resource hours for children

As some are you are very well aware, Down  Syndrome is not a proscribed condition when it comes to allocating resource teaching hours to our children, and thus they in effect get learning support from general allocation rather than being allocated a set number of hours like other conditions such as autism. Mary Doherty is leading a campaign to have DS recognised as a condition which attracts automatic allocation in the Department of Education. Today Mary, Sarah & Pat Clark of DSI handed a letter in to Minister Ruairi Quinn as part of the campaign to get recognition for our children.

Lobbying for services

Theres been some parents who have contacted us with information that their child has been told that their child must move to another service provider, or that the current provider cannot offer them services any more. In one case a parent whose adult son is in residential care was asked if they owned their own home because they can get a grant to modify the house so that their son could live there instead of in residential care. If any of this sounds familiar please email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Speech & Language Survey Results

S&L Survey Results

The committee would like to thank everyone who took part in our S&L survey for children aged 0-18. The results were quiet shocking. It would seem that among our members, 75% of children are only receiving 6 sessions of S&L therapy a year. The committee are currently investigating several possibilities and we will inform members soon of plans to rectify this situation. Watch this space!!!
